I was about 10-years-old when I first started to notice cars and the first car that captured my imagination was the Suzuki Samurai. I loved the way it looked. It seemed fun to drive. Almost like a big toy! I never considered the fact that the wheel base was way to short and they would tip over if taking a corner faster than 30mph. And that they were massively under powered, sporting only a 1.3 liter engine that put out a measly 63hp. Who cares?!?! Samurai’s where awesome!!

Years later, when it came time to purchase my first car I never really considered a Samurai. By that time, they were labeled “hair dresser’s jeeps.”

1987 Honda CRX

That tip over thing I mentioned…that was proven true by Consumer Reports magazine. I’m actually not sure they were still being made in 92′. With all of that being said, I still wanted a car that represented what the Samurai stood for; Something fun, something I could afford, something that was good on gas and something that was reliable. That car was a 1987 Honda CRX.

My dad found the car in the newspaper. It was about 30 miles from our house. It was a white, 5-speed with 63,000 and we bought it for $3700. Back in 1992, there weren’t many mods for these cars. I added some Yosemity Sam “Back Off” mud flaps and a Sony Car Diskman. One fateful day my friend and I were on our way to go snowboarding and before we could get out of our town a lady in a Lexus blew a stop sign and I T-boned her. Bye, Bye CRX 🙁
